Give it a year, and everyone will pretend to have agreed all along with Peter Hitchens and Jeremy Corbyn about Ukraine. It will all have come out about Volodymyr Zelensky and his startling backers, exactly as we forlorn souls will have said at the time. We have been here before over Iraq. No one now admits to having supported that war.
Everyone knows how bad Russia is. Well, so is Ukraine. Sadly, one of them is going to win. We are then going to have to deal with whichever one it was. The tide is turning towards recognition of that reality. Read the papers. At least, read between the lines. For now.
Whoever had won, then we are going to have to deal with them, because our people would not put up with even one winter of shivering in the dark when it could have been avoided, they do not fancy Saudi Arabia much, and everyone is slowly but surely starting to admit that some of us had been right all along about the regime in Ukraine.
It would take decades to harness the power of the State to deliver all-of-the-above energy independence, as advocated forever by some of us in the wilderness. In the meantime, our people will rightly demand heat and light. Not to mention food.
Don't expect any thanks, though.
