If all of the 92 elected hereditary peers are men, all are public school, and half are Old Etonians, then how is that a case for replacing them with people who had been elected in the more usual manner? Look who wins elections in this country.
Look who is going to be Prime Minister for the rest of this century. They are going to have the ethnic diversity that the elected hereditaries lacked. But they are all going to be men, they are all going to be public school, and well over half of them are going go be Old Etonians. Unlike the elected hereditaries, they are all going to be members of the same political party. Guess which one.
That is what the voters want. Regularly offered alternatives, they actively prefer this. And who are "they"? They are the electorally decisive voting bloc, which is the working class, especially in the North of England, the Midlands, and North Wales.
The trick is to catch the ear of the beneficiaries of that preference, both directly and through those decisive voters. Or end up standing on street corners while clutching your plastic bags and shouting at passers by about your three As at A-level and your Politics degree. Yes, dear.
