A Red Letter Day In The Julian Calendar

Unless someone really did pledge (not, at this stage, donate) the five thousand pound deposit by close of business tomorrow, then it is fair to say that I am not going to be contesting the European Elections here in the North East. It was always a long shot.

But how am I going to vote? Well, I have not yet decided. Labour never won the European Elections under Tony Blair, Gordon Brown or Ed Miliband. When, as is universally expected, Labour tops the poll at these European Elections, then Jeremy Corbyn will have achieved something that none of his three most recent predecessors ever did. It would be good to be part of that. We shall see.

And every vote either for Labour or for the Brexit Party, either for Corbyn's Leadership or for that of Nigel Farage, will be a vote for Julian Assange. Taken together, those will be the the first and second placed, accounting for more than half the votes cast. That will be the verdict of the British people, if not in this case, then certainly on it. It will be good to be part of that.

Alas, in the House of Commons, they will still be cheering the extradition to his death of a man who dared to call himself a journalist without ever having slept with an MP, who dared to expose the war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq, and who dared to resist extradition under sex laws in Sweden that were as unconscionable as the sex laws in Brunei.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
