Marching Out

This year, either the DUP will demand another gargantuan payoff and be given it, or, far less probably, the DUP will demand another gargantuan payoff but not be given it, thereby causing that party to bring down the Government and force a third General Election in three years.

Either way, the patience even of the English will finally snap, and withdrawal from Northern Ireland, whether or not the Republic wanted the place, would proceed rapidly. Far more rapidly than, for example, Brexit. Not that that is saying very much.

Northern Ireland will be given the dignity of its full 100 years, until 2022. But that will be that. And the DUP will be responsible.
