This country is preparing to add to what is already its fairly long list of bioethical rogue state activities going back to the 1980s, when Britain first became notable for such practices as nowhere else would permit.
Why is this happening here, in particular?
Why not in Scandinavia, or the Benelux countries, or Canada, or New Zealand, or any of the most liberal of the United States of America?
The answer is that there is no longer anyone here to stop it.
Going back to the 1980s, indeed. Nothing else from that political era has proven so enduring. What you think of this is what you think of that.
