Robert Byrd opposed the Iraq War. He also believed in getting money spent on his development-needy, investment-hungry, infrastructure-thirsty constituents. He had the wit to oppose the 1965 Immigration Act. (Why are Irish-Americans so sentimental about Ted Kennedy, who by that Act made immigration from Ireland all but impossible, flooded America with Hispanics and Asians who were far cheaper to employ than the Irish had become, and thus greatly eroded both America as an English-speaking country and, since most people in Latin America are not orthodox Catholics, the position of Catholicism and of the Catholic Church in American life?)
And now, Governor Joe Manchin has confirmed that he will be contesting November's Special Election to serve the rest of Byrd's term. A filibuster-breaking Democrat who is a pro-life Catholic, who is a member of the NRA, who is a strong supporter of coal, and who is wanted for the job by the AFL-CIO. "Almost heaven, West Virginia"? What do you mean, "Almost"?
