At what turned out to be the last appearance by Hazel Blears as a Secretary of State, it was Margaret Beckett who dominated proceedings.
She should not have been brought back into the Cabinet this time. Rather, she should never have been out of it in the first place.
Brown needs the mainstream Left, and he needs the East Midlands. The most distinguished mainstream Left figure still in the Commons is an East Midlands MP.
Margaret Beckett.

Well the problem is partly generational.
ReplyDeleteA lot of Labour heavyweights (Blunkett,Reid Beckett, Clarke, Dobson, Hewitt.....Milburn) could do a much better job than the youth team players that Brown is relying on.
In part the 1997 heavyweights are now too old. And the youngsters are too young and Bliarite.
Hence this over reliance on the House of Lords.
Another problem is that Labour is now fatally split. Why does no one seem to get that Hutton, Flint, Blears, Purnell are BLiarites.
Everyone gets it.
