The Sun Has Set - Someone Should Tell Auntie

The British Empire no longer exists. Nor, arguably, does the Anglican Communion - it has not been in communion with itself since the unilateral American ordination of women in the Seventies, and the closest ties within it now bypass these islands, North America and the Antipodes entirely, at least above the level of semi-detached parochial (or, very rarely, diocesan) oases in those areas.

But the dear old BBC, citadel of public school Churchianity, cannot grasp this, instead describing the Archbishop of Canterbury as "spiritual guide to eighty million Anglicans worldwide". Even that figure depends on counting everyone baptised in the Church of England. Poor old Auntie. What is she going to say next? "Both universities"?

Quite. And relying on census data to tell you how many Christians there are in the UK is equally daft.

  2. Why? Babies don't fill in census forms.

I realise that the likes of you got the shock of your sweet lives when the last census revealed the seventy-two per cent figure, although it came as no surprise to those of us in mainstream British society.

But there we are. The claim of the National Secular Society that it spoke for "the overwhelming majority" was simply false. Just never mention the figure to the BBC to this day - it goes ballistic. The truth hurts, I suppose.
