Not Known At This Address?

“That boy should be getting us coffee,” said Bill Clinton to Ted Kennedy of Barack Obama. In a colonial outpost of liberal elite America, it is almost forgivable that David Lammy insists on being addressed as “Deputy Prime Minister” rather than by name. Almost.

Lammy is like a once-glittering ornament of that milieu both here and at its imperial centre, the then Prince Andrew, who would enter a room in an entirely informal setting, and unless everyone fell silent and stood up, would go out and come back in again so that they could “get it right”. But why does Lammy not prefer the much grander “My Lord Chancellor”? How would you address him, and why?

  1. I would make a point of not speaking to David Lammy.

    1. Then he really would boom, "Do you know who I am?"
