That Is Reality

The official media are studiously avoiding any mention of how Libya got that way. For all her many faults, Theresa May has done nothing remotely as bad as the invasion of Libya. Meaning that, like the much-maligned Gordon Brown, she has no claim to be the worst Prime Minister ever, or in living memory, or even only of the last four.

Of the universally disastrous wars of the last 20 years, Tony Blair had more of them, but David Cameron had the worst of the lot, the one in Libya. So take your pick as to which of those two was the worst Prime Minister of the last four, or in living memory, or ever.

By the way, do not assume that May will soon be gone. When Cameron went, then the Conservative Party's MPs could think of no other candidate to succeed him. Quite recently, two thirds of them reiterated that view.

So even if she did go, then it would be in favour of her own chosen successor, politically exactly where she was, without a contest. When she does go, then that is what is going to happen. And she might not go for three years yet.

She might then hand over a Conservative Party is a parlous condition. But it would still get more votes and far more Commons seats than any right-wing alternative, just as it always does, since there have always been right-wing alternatives. That is reality.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. I will stand for this seat, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
