I support the monarchy in principle. It keeps sweet the people who need to be kept sweet. But a four-year-old's teacher curtsying to him on his first day of school? I am almost tempted to say, "Come back, Roy Jenkins, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair, all is forgiven." Almost.
Then again, perhaps that was what she was curtsying to? In the person of the heir to the Spencer heir. That House, far grander than the present Royal Family, has pulled some stunts in its time, but Diana may yet turn out to have been its shrewdest politician of them all.
