Wholly Both

I am not remotely American, only time will tell if I do indeed end up as another Christopher Hitchens or John Derbyshire, and I do not know what a "Street Helenian" is, but apart from that, only the Chalcedonian response is possible to this anonymous comment on a previous post:

10 years tops before whether you are British or American, and within that whether you are a paleocon or a populist Dem, joins the long list of unanswered questions that define David Lindsay.

It begins with Northern, St. Helenian or vaguely Scottish and proceeds through hack or intellectual, populist or elitist, radical or reactionary, Labour or Tory, lower or upper middle class, white or mixed race, man about town or monk, mainline parochial Catholic or partisan traditionalist, ex Anglo-Catholic or ex middle of the road C of E, best man on the stag night of life or something else entirely? There will be more.

"Best man on the stag night of life"? Wish I'd thought of that one. May well use it.

As for "hack or intellectual, populist or elitist, radical or reactionary, Labour or Tory", in each case, as in that of "a paleocon or a populist Dem", you cannot truly be either except within the framework of being the other.
