Five More Years

That'll do nicely.

We can do a lot of regrouping in five years.

Let's get on with it.

I thought you'd pulled out of this election so you could stand in an October election. Looks like you've misjudged it.

No, I pulled out because I was ill. I still am. But I won't be in five years' time. Dead, perhaps. But not ill.

This could not be better news.

Yeah but hang on, you were convinced there would be another one in October. Were you wrong to think that?

Everyone was convinced of a lot of things only 24 hours ago.

Five more years makes Pat Glass older than those of her workmates who had already retired by then, that is her world, where people retire in their fifties. It makes Watts Stelling and Owen Temple about 70, possibly more in Temple's case.

And it means a new electoral system. Why concentrate solely on this seat? As such, it might no longer exist.

Sure, but you never said "I'll be ready in six months if it all falls apart, but five years would be even better". You said you wanted another election this year, because no one else would have any money amongst other things. So either you really wanted one later this year, or you really wanted one in five years. Which was it?

I said that I'd have been ready for an autumn Election, whereas a lot of people wouldn't have been.

Everyone expected there to be one. Giving in on fixed-term Parliaments is a sign of just how far the Lib Dems have made the Tories bend.

Well, I shall be very ready indeed in five years' time.

So will our people in a lot of other seats.

If they step to it. As I understand that several of them, having drawn the same conclusion as I have from this development, are already doing.
