Down By The Riverside?

Louise Ellman's predecessor as the Member of Parliament for Liverpool Riverside was the late Bob Parry.

In April 1992, Parry, whom the "anti-totalitarian" Oliver Kamm describes as "among the thickest parliamentarians I can recall", was arrested in Tiananmen Square for unfurling a banner in protest against the 1989 massacre there. He later came into the House of Commons to vote against Maastricht one day after he had undergone a quadruple heart bypass.

By contrast, Ellman has done, well, what, exactly? In 22 years in the Commons, what has she achieved? Her beloved Tony Blair never made her the Minister for anything, despite her obvious craving for office, and look at some of the people whom he did prefer.

Ellman has no backbench accomplishments worth mentioning, either. "A highly effective Chair of the Transport Select Committee"? What would transport in this country be like if there were a useless Chair of the Transport Select Committee? It does not bear thinking about.

Until she became a professional anti-Corbynist, 18 years into her time in Parliament, then nobody had ever heard of Louise Ellman. At 73 and with a record like that, then she was understandably about to be deselected. Anti-Semitism, you say? Funny how there is never a specific incident to back up any allegation of that. I know whereof I speak.

In that vein, for a party that came third there in 2017 with all of 6.6 per cent of the vote, Luciana Berger looks set to win Finchley and Golders Green because she comes from exactly the right ethnic minority and because she holds exactly the right views in relation a foreign state.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party is now in the process of registration. After nearly 30 years of suggestion, speculation, and even a sort of preparation, I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham. The crowdfunding page is here, and buy the book here. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.

  1. Louise Ellman has quit Labour rather than face a trigger ballot. She's the one who was outraged Corbyn attended a 2010 event at which holocaust survivor Hajo Meyer criticised Israel, somehow forgetting she attended the event herself & stayed longer than Corbyn did! Good riddance.
