Yet still they insist that there is something left-wing about the EU of Ursula von der Leyen and of the appalling Christine Lagarde, who has been one of the principal oppressors of the Greek and numerous other peoples. They do so either as a point in its favour or as a point against it. But in either case, nothing could be further from the truth.
Yes, Labour is now pretty much signed up to a second referendum EU membership, leading to a Remain vote, as advocated recently by Laura Pidcock both on Question Time and on the Today programme. Enough of its MPs would seem to be opposed to one to block it, but that assumes overwhelming Conservative opposition to it.
Jeremy Hunt wanted this in 2016, when Jeremy Corbyn certainly did not. And Boris Johnson wants whatever might best serve the advancement of Boris Johnson at the given moment. We are not talking about this referendum in the next Parliament. Nobody is suggesting that. The people who want it, want it now. And they might very well get it now.
Beyond that, another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party will be registered before the House of Commons rises for the summer recess, even if I have to pay for it myself, ongoing lawfare or no ongoing lawfare.
And I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham even if I can raise only the deposit, which I could do by going pretty overdrawn, although that was not how I was brought up. I would still prefer to raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign, but I am no longer making my candidacy conditional on having done so. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
