Building Better, Building Beautiful

"It is the long centuries of Christian dominance in Europe which laid the foundations of national loyalty, as a loyalty above those of faith and family," opines Man In The News, Roger Scruton. This jaw-droppingly erroneous statement is redolent, as public school Church of England-ness generally is, of the Emperor worship in which the early Christians were martyred for refusing to participate.

There are, by the way, very few people like that in the Church of England now. Its remaining active membership consists quite overwhelmingly of those whose allegiance is, in this order, to the global Evangelical movement, to the Anglican Communion in general and its African Evangelical bastions in particular, and to the Church of England in a permanent state of war with all the institutions of the British State apart from a powerless monarchy that such people pretend is on their side despite the total lack of evidence to that effect.

Even so, though, Scruton deserves better than to be defended by Toby Young, the ongoing rehabilitation of whom is a major national scandal. I am both mixed-race and disabled, so Young wants to kill me twice. He is the internationally important eugenicist whom the Government tried to put in charge of the entire university sector.

Young is also a self-confessed sexual assailant, and a self-confessed supplier of Class A drugs, a subject on which Scruton is entirely sound. Through the eugenic London Conference on Intelligence, Young combines his several interests by being closely associated with Emil Kirkegaard, who is an advocate of the rape of drugged children. Young is welcome to argue against me on these points as another parliamentary candidate here at North West Durham.

Meanwhile, the task that has been assigned to Scruton, and which is in no sense "non-political", is a vitally necessary one. Regard for the true and the good declines relentlessly in the supposedly superficial context of poor aesthetics, of literally false and bad art. Doctrinal orthodoxy and moral standards slip and slide where the liturgy and its accoutrements are less than adequately tasteful or edifying. Educational standards collapse and crime rockets in the midst of hideous architecture and décor. And so forth.

That is to be expected. The Divine Attributes are identical among Themselves and with the Divine Essence, and those Attributes include Absolute Truth, Absolute Goodness, and Absolute Beauty. Therefore, nothing can be true which is not both good and beautiful, nothing can be good which is not both true and beautiful, and nothing can be beautiful which is not both true and good.

Someone needs to say that, and someone needs to do something about it. Alas, that someone probably cannot be anyone whom Toby Young feels moved to defend, and certainly cannot be anyone who holds that Christianity "laid the foundations of national loyalty, as a loyalty above those of faith and family."
