Heads On The Block

Israel is to revoke the media credentials of Al Jazeera journalists and close the network's office in Jerusalem.

I am the first to say that Israel should be held to the same standards as anywhere else. Or, better yet, to the same standards as any other Western-style democracy.

Well, this action falls far short of those standards.

Nor is it possible to avoid the fact that it corresponds very closely with the interests of Saudi Arabia.

Indeed, Israel specifies that, "We have based our decision on the move by Sunni Arab states to close the Al Jazeera offices and prohibiting their work."

In other words, Israel, "the only democracy in the Middle East" (in which case, so much for the "liberation" of Iraq), now openly looks for its own model to Egypt, to Jordan, to the United Arab Emirates, and, above all, to Saudi Arabia.
