1982 And All That

"Corbyn is a traitor, blah blah blah."

You might as well have said that about Margaret Thatcher, who wanted a leaseback and who had absolutely no intention of asking the Falkland Islanders about it.

You might as well say it about the entire Foreign Office to this day.

At least Corbyn advocates any say at all for the Islanders, unlike either Maggie or the mandarins.

Only Enoch Powell's speech on mettle and metal persuaded Thatcher to launch a war for the Falklands, and his contempt for her in general was practically boundless.

The complete failure of the Conservatives to make any headway with this story speaks for itself. They thought that it would be huge. But it just isn't.
