Parish Notices

A 28 per cent turnout in a Parish Council by-election is astounding, and a complete absence of spoilt papers is almost miraculous. Yet we have have just managed both here in Lanchester.

Congratulations to Alan Myers. And to Malcolm Clarke; after 12 years, I am no longer the youngest member of Lanchester Parish Council.

Commiserations to Maureen Bennett on a very respectable third place showing by any standards, and certainly with no machine whatever behind her. If they will forgive my saying so on the Internet, I very much hope that both she and her proposer will stand in the election of the full Council in 2014, since they would be very good indeed, and since theirs is an important but excluded political position which needs to claw back representation at every opportunity, from Lanchester Parish Council all the way down to the regional list system for Strasbourg and the provision for People's Peers. Roll on electoral reform for Westminster, and primaries for the candidates in such reformed elections.

And have the Lib Dems got the message from this microcosm of Middle England? They can have it as many times as they like. But one really would have thought that once was enough.
