At least there will be no tariffs on Britain. We no longer make anything. But it is delicious to watch the discombobulation of the British Right. Empire Loyalism or "the Special Relationship". They cannot have both. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer is right that Britain does not need to chose between being a satellite of the United States and being a vassal of the European Union. He is just wrong to assume that we should be both. We should be neither. As should Canada.
Between the 1860s and the 1970s, the Hamiltonian American School, as expanded by the American System of Henry Clay, worked to make the United States the world's largest economy, with the world's highest standard of living, culminating in the glorious achievements of the New Deal, which in turn made possible the Civil Rights movement. But Donald Trump understands none of that. The best that can be said of him is that at least he is not an avowed enemy of such things, as Justin Trudeau and Mark Carney are.

ReplyDeleteThere are no Empire loyalists any more since there is no longer any British Empire. Everyone knows the “Special Relationship” is a nice way of saying we are the lapdog to the US which took over from us as the West’s leading imperial power thanks to our self-destructively stupid decision to declare war on Germany and enter World War Two over the Danzig. See John Charmley’s “Churchill: The End of Glory” (which Alan Clark wrote in the Times was “ Probably the most important revisionist text to be published since the war”) and see also Peter Hitchens “The Phoney Victory.”
The Left’s record of opposing even the right to self determination of the people in our remaining overseas territories is truly appalling. New Labour tried to sell out Gibraltar to Spain against the wishes of its inhabitants in 2002, and is now doing the same to Chagos. When Jeremy Corbyn was Labour leader he also pledged to give Chagos to Mauritius and even to negotiate joint sovereignty over the Falkland Islands with Argentina against the wishes of their respective peoples. Yet he and the Left claim to believe in democracy.
Talk about “discombobulation.”
Better out that in? So to speak.
