Welcome to middle age, I suppose. Two bereavements in as many nights. Both in their late eighties, and neither of them related to Covid-19, but even so. And it is one thing to be unable to make it to the funeral in Saint Helena. But I am not going to be able to make it to the funeral in Burnhope, either. Only 30 people, and all that. What times these are.
Yet there is a message of hope that life goes on. My great-aunt died during last night in Saint Helena, where, by the way, there has never been a case of Covid-19. She had been in a wheelchair from polio since the age of 12. She was 88, and during her lifetime polio cases worldwide had decreased by 99 per cent. There is a world on the other side of this.
