Rutherglen and Hamilton West would be Labour's last chance to win anything in Scotland. If it could not even win there, even after this and even in the midst of the SNP's wider predicament, then it would be well and truly finished.
A Conservative Government at Westminster, really just the fact that there was one, made the SNP hegemonic in Scotland. That in turn took down the Scottish Labour Party. In the great scheme of things, that demise has been almost incidental.
But if, even under these circumstances, Labour failed to take back a seat that it had lost by a mere 5,230 votes as recently as last year, then that demise would also be total.
