At 41, John Woodcock has thrown in the towel when it comes to elections to the House of Commons. But what has he ever done to deserve a peerage? Ian Austin you can see, from the point of view of the people who awarded it. But Woodcock? It is a mystery.
Boris Johnson should publish a list of 20 or 30 leading figures on the Independent Left, people who had no hope of election to the Commons, announcing that they had been ennobled. If they then chose never to attend the House of Lords, then that would be their choice. But their subsequent complaints would have to be seen in that light.
