Points Based

Nobody much noticed last week's immigration thingy. It proposed something that had already failed under the last Labour Government. The Home Office had just taken down an old file from the shelf.

In any case, when had anybody last mentioned immigration? When this review, or whatever it was, finally arrived, then it had a sense of being out of time.

No, the reason why Priti Patel is fighting for her political life today is that, while she was appointed at a time when Boris Johnson owed people like her, he now owes the voters of places like North West Durham.

We have been living in her dream economy for decades, and it is a nightmare from which we hope that we have at last been allowed to wake up.

The Right has nowhere else to go, and Johnson understands that as well as John Major did. The Right put him in as well, before ending up hating him as it will very soon hate Johnson.

But we have not exchanged one one-party state for another. Ours is the 2020 Vision of a new political party, a new think tank, a new weekly newspaper, a new monthly cultural review, a new quarterly academic journal, and so much else besides.

I will be standing for Parliament again here at North West Durham next time, so please give generously. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
