What I like most about the Fourth of July is that they still call it that. Think about it. But it is right there in Philadelphia, the city of the Declaration of Independence, that justice looks most likely to come for the victims of Grenfell Tower.
The founding myths of the American Republic are essentially bunk, like everybody else's. But it can still have its Shining City On The Hill moments. The problem is when it thinks that is just is that City, because it just is, because it just is, because it just is. The Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas may yet turn out to be a genuine source of that beacon light which guides freedom-loving people everywhere. There have been others, of course.
The Hamiltonian American School, as expanded by the American System of Henry Clay, was a pro-business tradition that between the 1860s and the 1970s worked to make the United States the world's largest economy, with the world's highest standard of living, culminating in the glorious achievements of the New Deal, which in turn made possible the rise and triumph of the Civil Rights movement.
That was achieved, by Democrats and Republicans alike, through the strict division between investment banking and retail banking, with large amounts of federal credit (in Britain, that would be central government credit), at low interest rates and over a long term, to build great national projects, notably enormous expansions in infrastructure, which then paid for themselves many times over. There were pro-business tariffs and subsidies, and there was a pro-business National Bank to promote the growth of productive enterprises rather than speculation.
Britain and America both need a lot more of this today. North West Durham needs it more than most. Another hung Parliament is coming, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it. A new party will be registered before the House of Commons rises for the summer recess, even if I have to pay for it myself, ongoing lawfare or no ongoing lawfare.
And I will stand for Parliament here at North West Durham even if I can raise only the deposit, which I could do by going pretty overdrawn, although that was not how I was brought up. I would still prefer to raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign, but I am no longer making my candidacy conditional on having done so. In any event, please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
