The ability to say the kind of thing that Ed Miliband said today, including without having to repeat it outside, is precisely why we have parliamentary privilege.

This is the point of it.

This is what it is for.

  1. Now we have this astonishing intervention from Peter Hitchens on his blog today on funding of political parties.

"In my view, Labour and the Tories are dead, speaking for nobody; UKIP and the Greens (though themselves imperfect in many ways as vehicles of the new left and the new right) are each much better representatives of the real divide in our society.""

    Indeed.

It's something I have long had at the back of my mind, but it's entirely true. UKIP and the Greens actually represent the real modern divide between Left and Right far better than anyone else.

Utterly and implacably opposed on liberty, environmentalism, borders, taxes, multiculturalism, EU/German federalism, Human Rights, the purpose of education, policing and welfare.

The main parties don't really disagree on any of this.

Which of them would pull out of the anti British Convention on Human, fight multiculturalism and tear down the windfarms tomorrow (as UKIP would)?

Or adopt the extreme Left polices the Greens have pledged.

We represent the real disagreements between people.

    1. Drivel.

Labour is funded by the small voluntary donations of millions of working people in this country.

  2. No, it isn't. Even Miliband promised to reform the unfair system by which it is funded.

But he didn't because-in the words of Len McCluskey-fewer than 5% of his members would voluntarily give it a penny.

As Mr Hitchens says, Labour and the Tories are last century's deadwood. The only parties that represent the real and bitter debate between Left and Right are UKIP and the Greens.

Standing for either of those parties is a clear statement of exactly where you stand on national independence, liberty, equality, multiculturalism, environmentalism , immigration, Human Rights or the purpose of education, criminal justice and welfare.

Those "militant breast-feeders" (turning up with banners to protest that Nigel Farage says they can't do what they want, whenever they want) are a perfect representation of the modern Left.

Just as, in America, the person the Democrats chose as their 2012 election symbol was Sandra Fluke.Which says it all about what the Left now is.

    1. Well, and its permanent poll lead (or as good as, for Election-winning purposes). And the millions of people who each give it a few quid a year under legislation bequeathed by Margaret Thatcher.
