Nothing less than the rights of entry, abode and work enjoyed by EU citizens must be extended to citizens of those states having the same monarch as the United Kingdom, or having the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as the final Court of Appeal, or both.
But Jamaican politicians want out of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council so that they can start having executions again.
As for the abolition of the monarchy, don't hold your breath. Observing the nearby peace and prosperity of the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands, 60 per cent of Jamaicans believe that the place should have remained a British Overseas Territory.
When it would have enjoyed far greater autonomy than the Irish Republic now enjoys, or than an "independent" Scotland would enjoy if the EU were to let her in. But of either of those, another time.

Is a referendum to be held on the question?
ReplyDeleteOn the monarchy, I expect so.
ReplyDeleteOn appeal to the Privy Council, I wouldn't have thought so.
On reversion to British sovereignty, I think that we can safely assume not. Although there is a Caribbean precedent: Anguilla reverted to Overseas Territory status by popular demand.
