In the words of Simon Heffer:
"I never thought when I was a mere lad that I would live to see the Bennite vision of the nationalisation of the banks fulfilled, and with the full-throated support of the Tory party."
Let there be an even greater day than this. Let the State, having taken over the banks, convert them (possibly while retaining a preference share) into mutual building societies.
We would.

When Heffer was a lad there was no such thing as Bennism, surely? I hate to pick nits...
ReplyDeleteAnd that mutualisation proposal merits some consideration. Alas, Messers Brown and Darling aren't too interested in spoiling the bankers' game as the bailout shows.
So forget about them and move on.
