AstraZeneca was formed in 1999 by the merger of Astra AB, a longstanding Swedish pharmaceuticals company, and Zeneca, which was then the recently demerged pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals businesses of ICI.
For much of its history, ICI was the largest manufacturer in Britain. But the AstraZeneca vaccine for Covid-19 is being manufactured mostly in India, and there is a shortage of it here in the country where the company that makes it is still headquartered.
Reindustrialisation is anathema to the people who are now back running all political parties, which is why we are still subject to the EU's State Aid rules. But I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?
