As the last American troops finally begin to withdraw from Afghanistan, presumably because there is now rather more need of them at home, consider the words of Britain's Secretary of State for Defence at the beginning of this utterly pointless war.
It will all be over without the firing of a shot, said the once ubiquitous John Reid, at least implying that it would have been over because we would have won. 19 and a half years later, it is only just beginning to end, long after we have been comprehensively defeated.
And British troops officially ended their combat role in Afghanistan on 27th October 2014. Yet they are still there. Think on.
