Although I was mostly a full-time activist even then, I must have been a schoolboy when I was first told that inside the European Commission, they were waiting for a British popular uprising against the Common Fisheries Policy to set off the chain of events that would destroy the European Union. We would want our fisheries back, so everyone would want their fisheries back, so everyone would want everything back. More than a quarter of a century later, here we are.
And when we say everything, then we do mean everything. It would be bad enough to remain subject to the likes of the State Aid rules, among the other paraphernalia of Margaret Thatcher's Single European Act and of Ted Heath's Customs Union. It would be intolerable to remain so subject while having no further say over the content of those things.
Yet the Conservatives are poised to inflict that vassalage upon us, while Labour and the Liberal Democrats will either join them in doing so or abstain. But I am the Independent parliamentary candidate for North West Durham. What are you doing?
