Energy

From Ofgem, to the Financial Conduct Authority, to the Competition and Markets Authority, today has been a good day. A moderately good day. But a good day, all the same.

At this rate, the shares in the energy companies will be worth so little that renationalisation will cost next to nothing. With or without that, the bills are coming down.

As are overdraft charges, even if, for now, the banks have seen off being treated like the common little payday lenders and rent-to-buy merchants. But the principle has been conceded.

Splitting up the Big Four and banning them from selling extras should both have happened years ago, but instead we had New Labour, which wanted to give them limited liability.

Yes, really. It took the Conservative Opposition and the Bush Administration to put the kibosh on that one. Now to follow through in the opposite direction.

There will be tremendous resistance within both main parties, at least in Parliament. Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it.

I will stand for this parliamentary seat of North West Durham, if I can raise the £10,000 necessary to mount a serious campaign.

By common consent, Labour, the Conservatives and I are each on 30 per cent support, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post. Please email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com. Very many thanks.
