The People's Vote, Indeed

The biggest mistake of Vince Cable's political life was that he did not insist on being made Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2010, as the price of his otherwise deal-breaking support for the Coalition.

Boris Johnson is just as finished as Cable. He was never going to be one of the two candidates sent out by Conservative MPs to the party in the country at large, and that was before he compared Theresa May to a suicide bomber. Jacob Rees-Mogg was never going to be one of those two, either. But at least he has never done that.

And we are edging closer and closer to a second referendum. If the option other than Remain were something like "the Norway Option", which would be the only thing worse than staying in the EU, then vote Remain, and resume the struggle the next day, as in 1975.

The problem with Brexit is that it is being run, insofar as it is being run at all, by the people whose position of Thatcherism In One Country was explicitly rejected by the areas, such as this one, that decided the result of the referendum.

We had already experienced what they had in mind. We had been living through it for 39 years and under all three parties, since the Callaghan Government's turn to monetarism in 1977. The people running Brexit, insofar as anyone is doing so, are the last people who ought to be allowed anywhere near the running of Brexit.

Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and our people need to hold the balance of power in it. My crowdfunding page is here, or email davidaslindsay@hotmail.com for other options. That address accepts PayPal.

  1. As the TUC calls for a second referendum, over 80 Conservative MPs are poised to vote against Chequers, Steve Baker has confirmed.

The Tory Right are the real Opposition. As ever.

    1. No one would vote for them as themselves, and they know it. The Labour Right thinks that people would, but the Tory Right is not that deluded.

80? Pull the other one! Which 80, exactly? Where have they been hiding up to now?
