Edward Snowden? I cannot see what the fuss was about.

A truly Alternative Christmas Message would have been delivered by Neil Clark or by Rod Liddle.

But which of them is now Comrade Madiba, and why?

    By resolution of the National House of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, subject to ratification by the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party?

    Or by resolution of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party, subject to ratification by the National House of Traditional Leaders of South Africa?

    Popes have been chosen by stranger means than that, and arguably still are. Or see the role of the British monarch as Head of the Commonwealth. There are many more examples, historically and contemporary.
