Looking Like Us

"They look like us," so if they do not look much like you, then you are obviously not one of "us". The present American bombardment of Somalia because it has refused to sign a particular oil deal does not even merit a mention, but Somalis do not look like "us", any more than Afghans, Iraqis or Libyans did. Ukraine's neighbours are indeed turning away black and brown refugees. This is the EU that Ukraine has today officially applied to join. This is NATO.

Opponents of the Iraq War were accused of treason and all the rest of it, but who has turned out to have been right? If even 10 per cent of the Russian public supports the invasion of Ukraine, then it is as popular as the invasion of Iraq was in Britain. The House of Commons has this evening voted to make organising a protest, simply as such, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

As in most wars, there are no goodies, but we are going to have to deal with whichever lot of baddies had won, more is the pity. On one side is Vladimir Putin, and we all know about him, although some people have seen through him rather longer than others. Consider the MP questioned what was then the emerging alliance with him, and specifically Putin's war in Chechnya as part of The War Against Terrorism, as early as 2001.

That MP accused Putin of rigging elections in 2008, called for Putin's assets to be frozen in 2010, called for a Magnitsky Act in 2012, called in 2013 for Russian arms corporations to be barred from Britain, accused Putin of war crimes in Syria in 2016, accused Putin of the Salisbury poisonings in 2018 (look it up), questioned in that same year ill-gotten Russian funding of the Conservative Party, and condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the first line of the Stop the War Coalition's recent statement. By contrast, here is the Russian Embassy, publicly endorsing the Conservative Party at the 2017 General Election.

On the other side is a ragbag of shady characters who, like Putin, wish to rule the whole of the area of the former Soviet Union. The likes of Mikheil Saakashvili and David Sakvarelidze wash up in Ukraine, there to engage the muscle of Svoboda, Pravy Sektor, the Azov Battalion, and so on. Why would Volodymyr Zelensky ally with such elements? Why would he not? The Far Right has seen Israel as the frontline of white supremacy for 20 years. The Israeli flag is now ubiquitous at Far Right events the world over.

For the sake of this, sport in general and football in particular have to be thoroughly politicised after all, although notice that people who will not play Russians or in Russia are still happy to go to Qatar. The homemade Molotov cocktail turns out to be an acceptable weapon in resisting occupation, and blowing oneself up to destroy a bridge turns out to be an acceptable tactic. The Foreign Secretary would support you if you went to fight for those who engaged in such practices. You see, they look like "us".

Of course, ethnic Russians also look like "us", but that did not protect the Irish, or the miners, or, in those days, football fans, before football was colonised by the warmongering liberal bourgeoisie that is practically certain never to fight in a war, being adept at finding cushy postings even in periods of conscription. Of course, it is comical to imagine, even in their youth, Tony Blair and David Cameron sallying forth into battle alongside the staff of The Guardian and The Times.

The proposals by the likes of Tom Tugendhat and Chris Bryant would give people with Slavic-sounding names, including Ukrainians, the treatment meted out to the Irish, to the miners, and to the football supporters of old, as to Afro-Caribbeans and to Muslims. Notice the scramble to defend the Trojan Horse hoax, the totally false basis of the Prevent strategy and of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act. Next up will be anyone whose name might pass for Chinese, or whose face might pass for East Asian. However residually or nominally, does Bryant still have any ministerial status in the Church of England or the Church in Wales?

Emmanuel Macron personifies the liberal bourgeoisie, and he has his finger on a nuclear button as surely as do Putin, the senile Joe Biden, Boris Johnson, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, Narendra Modi, the Pakistani generals who never give the codes to a mere politician, and whoever is the Prime Minister of Israel this week. Did President Eisenhower, a man of immense military experience, threaten nuclear war over the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956? But who today is a patch on him? It has never been more important to ensure that there were as few nuclear weapons as possible in the world. Look at what the prospect of governing a nuclear armed state actively attracts.

Instead of Trident, an extra £70 billion should be given to each of the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force. This would not entail depriving anything else of funding. The issuing of currency is an act of the State, which is literally the creator of all money. A sovereign state with its own free floating, fiat currency has as much of that currency as it chooses to issue to itself. All wars are fought on this understanding, but the principle applies universally. The State also has the fiscal and monetary means to control inflation, means that therefore need to be under democratic political control in both cases.

If I were to be elected at North West Durham, then I would have on my parliamentary staff an adviser who had served in each of the Armed Forces, preferably having been honourably discharged after at least 22 years. Let the armchair generals and the Short Commission Brigade argue with them. Although there would have to some sort of formula to ensure that candidates were at least in broad political agreement with me, I would be most minded, in return for the smallest possible administrative fee, to have those advisers elected by former and if possible even serving members of each of the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force. At the very least, I challenge every other candidate at North West Durham to match that commitment.

Chris Grieve Watch: Day 134

I have never heard of you, and I was not in Durham that Thursday evening. Or any evening in that period. I was on a tag.

Why do people feel the need to suck up to Kamm like this?

Labour Candidate Watch: Day 165

165 days after the Cabinet reshuffle that called a General Election for May 2023, there is still no Labour candidate at North West Durham, which in 2019 Labour lost for the first time and by only 1,144 votes.

By contrast, I have been a candidate for North West Durham at the next General Election since even before the last one, fighting to strengthen families and communities by securing economic equality and international peace through the democratic political control of the means to those ends, including national and parliamentary sovereignty. Contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com.

Or contact nwdclp.campaigns@gmail.com if you wanted permanent austerity at home, if you wanted forever war abroad, and if you did not want a mixed-race MP for this seat. This post will appear daily until someone had proven to be so pro-austerity, so pro-war, and so racist, that even the Labour Party was sufficiently impressed.

The Adrian Hilton Challenge: Day 204

Adrian Hilton, I had to Google you, and I still have little or no idea who you are, so when, exactly, have I ever "stalked" you at all, much less "for longer than [you] care to remember"?

This post will appear daily until further notice.

The Oliver Kamm Challenge: Day 204

Oliver Kamm, whose signature to this do you claim that I forged? Name the name.

Oliver Kamm, when, exactly, have I ever been found to have accused anyone of child abuse?

Oliver Kamm, when, exactly, have I ever called for anyone to be murdered?

And Oliver Kamm, since I am a declared and active candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham, are you? If not, why not?

I could go on at very great length, but these questions will do for now.

This post will appear daily until further notice.

The Representatives Challenge: Day 204

As already stated on the day after my release: "The instant that Labour lost control of Durham County Council, then I was granted an unsolicited tag for more than 10 weeks of future good behaviour. I invite each and every Member of Parliament for the area covered by Durham County Council, each and every member of Durham County Council, and each and every member of Lanchester Parish Council, to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if they thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know." The current total is zero.

Furthermore, I invite each and every other candidate for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if they thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. In this case, names most certainly will be published, including as part of my election literature. The current total is zero. If that remained the case when the next General Election was called, then my literature would state that each and all of my opponents, by name, did not think that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me.

This post will appear daily until further notice.

The Clergy Challenge: Day 204

I invite each and every bishop, priest and deacon of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if he thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know. The current total is zero.

Since, as private citizens, none of them has resigned as a Patron of my parliamentary campaign at North West DurhamI invite each and all of the 12 archbishops and diocesan bishops of the Red Wall dioceses of Birmingham, Hallam, Hexham and Newcastle, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Nottingham, Salford, Shrewsbury, and Wrexham, to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if he thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know. The current total is zero.

And since none of them has resigned as a Patron of my parliamentary campaign at North West Durham, I invite each and all the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Franciscan Custos of the Holy Land, the Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem, the Ethiopian Orthodox Archbishop of Jerusalem, the Maronite Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem and Palestine, the Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, the Syrian Catholic Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem, and the Armenian Catholic Patriarchal Exarch of Jerusalem and Amman, to contact davidaslindsay@hotmail.com if he thought that I was factually or morally guilty of any criminal charge that had ever been brought against me. Not legally guilty; Bill Cosby is legally innocent. Factually and morally guilty. No name would be published except at the request of its bearer, but if anyone ever did get in touch, then the readers of this site would be the first to know. The current total is zero.

The scandalous allegation against me on 2nd March 2020 was recanted under oath at Durham Crown Court on 11th of that month, calling gravely into question my convictions the next day by exposing that key character witness as unreliable, a fact that was not mentioned in closing statements or in summation. Unless, as is widely assumed, the real reason for them is the content of this book, then the sanctions imposed upon me in my absence on 2nd March 2020 are void. I had not received a written apology by 30th September 2021, nor was any such thing to be published in full in The Northern Cross.

Financially, I would then have settled for the reimbursement of my victim surcharges. One would not wish to have to sue the Church. But while I am not yet in a position to act on it, I must now declare my intention in principle to do so. And if I were to be defeated at the next General Election, then I would seek to have that result overturned in the courts on grounds of undue spiritual influence by the Safeguarding Office of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, naming all relevant persons in the court papers. It has come to this.

This post will appear daily until further notice.

No Ambush Here

At his own selection meeting, Nick Forbes took only four votes. And so what if the other 11 were from the Left of the Labour Party? Forbes has been in politics a very long time.

Forbes is originally from Weardale, so he should seek the Labour nomination for the parliamentary seat of North West Durham. No one else wants it. I look forward to facing him on the stump.

Advantage Card

In the bottom left of this photograph is Sebastian James. He is now the CEO of Boots UK, which takes four of the five pounds that you pay in one of its shops for a lateral flow test that in Ireland costs the equivalent of 70p. Whatever happened to everyone else in this picture?

Glad You Could Join Us

What would happen if both parties went bust at the same time? Both Londongrad and the trade unions increasingly give the impression that they are sick of paying for the privilege of having their faces spat in, even if the Government does still care a lot more for Russian oligarchs than for Ukrainian refugees. Of course, both parties care a lot more for oligarchs in general than they do for refugees in general. Into the very recent past, it was officially a “conspiracy theory” to suggest that the Russian oligarchy funded the Conservatives.

With all of that in mind, a warm welcome to those of you who are new to the fields of energy independence, diversification away from the international trade in arms, cleaning up the City and its tax havens, cleaning up the funding of political parties, and even so much as recognising the symbiotic relationship between NATO and the EU. Some of us have been here for a very long time.

Brexit is a double opportunity, both to reorganise the British economy under State direction, and to begin to develop a fully independent British foreign policy. We need an all-of-the-above energy policy based around nuclear power and this country’s vast reserves of coal; Britain was the world leader in clean coal technology until the Miners’ Strike, and it ought to be so again. We also have increasingly evident reserves of lithium, and we have our own oil and gas reserves.

Around these, by all means let there be solar power, wind power, tidal power, and anything else that we could possibly use to bathe our country in heat and light while keeping us away from any entanglement involving, for example, Saudi oil or Russian gas. Wind and tidal turbines are of course made of steel, the manufacture of which requires coal such as we have in abundance.

Among other things, the all-of-the-above energy policy would make possible an all-of-the-above transport policy with public transport free at the point of use, plus electricity free at the point of use up to really quite a high level of usage, with only a nominal charge thereafter. The State should ensure both the manufacture in this country of vehicles that could be run on domestically produced electricity, and the universal availability of charging points.

As an aside, so much for the idea that Donald Trump was a Russian stooge. He spent four years trying to scupper Nord Stream 2 while he flooded Ukraine with illegal arms such as are now being put very much to use, and not on the Russian side.

We should end this country’s poisonous relationship with the Gulf monarchies. Instead of NATO, we need bilateral nonaggression treaties with all other European countries including Russia and indeed Ukraine, with the United States, and with Canada. We need nonaggression treaties with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and with the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, and preferably with each of their members bilaterally.

There should be no foreign military bases on British soil, but justice for Harry Dunn, self-determination for the Chagossian people, and victory to Julian Assange. Military force should be used only ever in self-defence, and only ever with the approval of the House of Commons, the composition of which therefore needs to be changed dramatically.

BAE Systems should be renationalised as the monopoly supplier to our own Armed Forces, with a ban on all sale of arms abroad, and with a comprehensive programme of diversification in the spirit of the Lucas Plan. And instead of Trident, an extra £70 billion should be given to each of the Royal Navy, the British Army, and the Royal Air Force.

That is what both fiscal policy and monetary policy are for: to encourage certain politically chosen forms of behaviour, and to discourage others. They are not where the State’s money comes from. Nothing is “unaffordable”, every recession is discretionary on the part of the Government, and there is no such thing as “taxpayers’ money”.

Armed with this understanding, and shielded by a strict statutory division between investment banking and retail banking, large amounts of central government credit, at low interest rates and over a long term, must be used for public works. Those would then pay for themselves many times over, ably assisted by pro-business tariffs and subsidies, by a pro-business National Bank to promote the growth of productive enterprises rather than speculation, by collective bargaining and trade union representation, by cooperative and mutual ownership, and by reconceived models of public ownership.

We should require the approval of the House of Commons for changes to interest rates, introduce a Glass-Steagall division between investment banking and retail banking, extend the Freedom of Information Act to the City of London, and conform its municipal franchise to that of local government in general.

All tax havens under British jurisdiction should be closed, non-domiciled tax status should be abolished, the Big Four accounting firms should be broken up, auditors should be banned by Statute from selling extras, and they should have unlimited liability. Crown immunity should be abolished. Limited Partnerships and Limited Liability Partnerships should be required to have at least one member who was a natural person resident in the United Kingdom.

The State should buy a stake in every FTSE 500 company, large enough to secure Board-level representation, for the exercise of which both the First Lord of the Treasury and the Chancellor of the Exchequer would be accountable to the House of Commons. After any investment in public services, the dividends would be distributed equally to everyone.

Public bodies and public contractors should be required to buy British wherever possible, and to buy local wherever possible. Employment rights should begin with employment, and apply regardless of the number of hours worked. There should be a four-day working week by 2100. Our people should be active in the trade unions appropriate to their jobs where applicable, or otherwise in Unite Community. The unions are crucial to the necessary mutualisation of the gig economy.

Every part of this country should be on the Belt and Road, not because we liked the Chinese regime, but because we had to be at the table to avoid being on the menu, and we had to be on the bus if we did not want to be under it. We should encourage the building of one or more Bering Strait crossings, as part of a wider and deeper realignment with the BRICS and other emerging economies on the understanding that “development is the new word for peace”. The principles of the Antarctic Treaty should be extended to Outer Space.

And so on. To return to the question of Trident, as Russian nuclear weapons are put on high alert, consider that British ones always are. Provided that he could get permission from Joe Biden, then it would never take Boris Johnson more than 15 minutes to blow up the world. Britain is the only country in which Party Leaders are ever asked whether they would do so, and even then the Leader of only one party ever is, thereby compelling him to say yes even though that it was almost certainly not true either of him or of his Conservative counterpart, who is pointedly never asked.

For all his faults, Jeremy Corbyn did and does stand up to this madness. He did and does so having questioned what was then the emerging alliance with Vladimir Putin as early as 2001, having accused Putin of rigging elections in 2008, having called for Putins assets to be frozen in 2010, having called for a Magnitsky Act in 2012, having called in 2013 for Russian arms corporations to be barred from Britain, having accused Putin of war crimes in Syria in 2016, having accused Putin of the Salisbury poisonings in 2018 (look it up), having in that same year questioned ill-gotten Russian funding of the Conservative Party, and having condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the first line of the Stop the War Coalitions recent statement.

If People Want To Support That Struggle?

Tomorrow, the House of Commons will sign off on the Police, Courts, Crime and Sentencing Bill, and demonstrations such as the anti-war ones in Russia will almost immediately become illegal in Britain.

It will not be a matter of invoking public order to arrest a certain number of participants, as has been happening there just as it has always happened here. Unlike in Russia, protest itself will be criminal. Organisers will face potential prison sentences of 10 years.

Whereas there is presumably no plan to prosecute Liz Truss for her incitement of what would be the criminal offence of travelling to Ukraine to fight there. There are people in prison for having gone to Rojava to fight against the so-called Islamic State, and the law would be the same. We have a Foreign Secretary who either does not know that, or does not care.

As Charlie D’Agata, Senior Correspondent of CBS News, said on Friday, “This isn’t a place, with all due respect, like Iraq or Afghanistan that has seen conflict raging for decades. This is a relatively civilised, relatively European – I have to choose those words carefully, too – city where you wouldn’t expect that, or hope that it’s going to happen.” So by all means hang the law and go and fight for that, says a woman who truly believes that she ought to be Prime Minister.

A Good War To Lose

“It’s very emotional for me because I see European people with blond hair and blue eyes being killed every day with Putin’s missiles and his helicopters and his rockets,” said David Sakvarelidze, who has dark brown hair and whose eyes appear to be green. He said this yesterday, unchallenged, on the BBC.

Sakvarelidze was Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Georgia from 2008 to 2012, and then an MP there from 2012 to 2015, before following his patron, the former President Mikheil Saakashvili, to Ukraine, of which they are both now citizens. Saakashvili was Governor of Odessa from May 2015 until November 2016, while from February 2015 until March 2016, Sakvarelidze was Deputy General Prosecutor of Ukraine.

Thus, then, speaks the anti-Putin elite across the former Soviet Union, all of which it still seeks to control: “It’s very emotional for me because I see European people with blond hair and blue eyes being killed every day with Putin’s missiles and his helicopters and his rockets.”

If Russia won, then Vladimir Putin would have won, giving Russia the gift of resistant Ukrainian “insurrection” and “terrorism” forever thereafter. If Ukraine won, then the likes of Sakvarelidze and the Azov Battalion would have won, and they would have no intention of stopping at the borders of the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine.

Sadly, one of those does have to win, and we are going to have to deal with whichever of them it was. In the meantime, though, we should absolutely not be taking either side.

Play An Active Role?

"We must all, in this House, be clear that British and NATO troops should not, must not, play an active role in Ukraine," James Heappey, Minister for the Armed Forces, told the House of Commons yesterday. If had been a Labour MP, then he would have lost the whip for that.

To keep either the Labour or the Conservative whip, then you need to make the sorts of calls that are being made by Chris Bryant and Tom Tugendhat. Imagine that an MP were to call for British citizens who also happened to hold any other nationality than Russian to be banned from donating to political parties, or to be made to take some sort of loyalty oath? British Israelis, say?

As it is, you cannot acquire or retain Labour Party without the approval of Assaf Kaplan, who holds only Israeli nationality. Imagine that he were a Russian, and a Russian with a record comparable to Kaplan's at that. Then again, much of the hardware that Russia is deploying against Ukraine was made by the company that was recently paying £200,000 per year to Peter Mandelson, he of the close ties to Oleg Deripaska to match his close ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

Labour's policy is bought and paid for by Victor Pinchuk, a Ukrainian oligarch worth around $1.4 billion. The son-in-law of the amazingly corrupt and not inconsiderably oppressive former President Leonid Kuchma, Pinchuk bankrolls the Tony Blair Faith Foundation. Over on the other side, Britain's richest man is Alisher Usmanov. With a fortune in the region of $20 billion, he is one of Vladimir Putin's three closest advisers. Having played a key role in the suppression of independent media, he lives unsanctioned in Surrey. But at least he is a British citizen. Unlike Pinchuk.

This whole debate is shot through with racism. "A European city!", they exclaim as the bombs rain down on Kiev, having had no such scruples about Belgrade, and as if a non-European city would be less deserving of sympathy. It remains my firm policy to write "Kyiv" only once the BBC has agreed a pronunciation of it. Today, is it using "Keev" on television, but "Kiv" on the radio.

We all know what "European" means, and of course they do either cheer on, or pretend not to notice, the routine bombardment of Arab, African and other cities either by our own states or with their active connivance. How many people in Britain even know that this country is at war in Yemen?

Among the other perpetrators of that war is the United Arab Emirates, which abstained in the United Nations Security Council rather than condemn, as I most certainly do, the Russian invasion of Ukraine. India, supposedly crucial to any alternative alliance to Russia and China, also abstained. Oh, what fools you are, if you believe one word that you are being told.

The UAE owns Manchester City, which has expressed support for Ukraine, as Everton did at the same time, but Celtic was fined for expressing support for Palestine. Homemade Molotov cocktails to resist occupation are all right in Ukraine, but not in Palestine. The same is true of killing oneself by blowing up a bridge. Whatever might be the difference?

Labour Candidate Watch: Day 163

163 days after the Cabinet reshuffle that called a General Election for May 2023, there is still no Labour candidate at North West Durham, which in 2019 Labour lost for the first time and by only 1,144 votes.

The Representatives Challenge: Day 202

The Clergy Challenge: Day 202

Youth Truth

The fate of Young Labour, as an organisation, is a small matter, but it is a sign of the times. If you believe in economic equality and in international peace, then you recognise the leading role of those who suffer most as a result of their absence, namely the working class and the youth. We know from the Coventry bin drivers' strike what Keir Starmer and his party think of the working class. And now, this.

Local Labour Parties are dominated by people whose professional lives consist of the publicly funded and the frighteningly state-empowered control of the young, the working-class, the black and the male. They were scared out of their lives at Jeremy Corbyn's influx of youth in general, and of youth that was disproportionately one or more of working-class, black and male in particular.

There those uppity sorts sat in meetings or in online fora, unable to be marked down or put on report, and under no social or institutional obligation to pretend to be less clever or well-read than the people who were used to having such sanctions at their disposal. They had used their antogonists' early finishes, sacrosanct weekends and long holidays against them, by using the time to get an education.

Starmer is the kind of politician that the old hands like. He is a white public schoolboy who looks able to deliver the electoral goods that would preserve and strengthen the power of the liberal bourgeoisie, and most especially of the women of the public sector middle class.

Especially but not exclusively in middle age and above, the liberal bourgeoisie is the class least likely to fight in a war, and the women of the public sector middle class are practically certain never to do so. Hence their enthusiasm for such interventions. They can do without being talked to out of turn by the cannon fodder.

Invasive Thinking

Those of us who said that there would not be a Russian invasion of Ukraine must have been right. We were told that in the event of such an invasion, then we would go to war with Russia. We are not at war with Russia, so there cannot have been any invasion.

Both Ukraine's and Russia's largest trading partner is China, which has been keeping out. But it seems to be shifting towards the probability of a Russian victory. In that case, then there is probably going to be one. Of sorts, anyway. Resistance in the west would continue forever.

We are going to have to deal with whoever had won. We cannot take sides, and it is not as if either of them is any more appealing than the other. And what if the likes of Svoboda, Pravy Sektor and the Azov Battalion did win, or at least win a couple of big enough battles to move them to press on? Seeing themselves as the true heirs of the Kievan Rus', and seeing the other side as stock Tartarised to the point of Untermensch, then where, when and why would they ever stop?

Russian victory would mean that just as Belarus had never become independent in any meaningful sense, so Ukraine's attempt at any more independence than that had lasted only one generation. What is now the extremely hawkish SNP would argue that that had been because Ukraine had "given up its nuclear weapons".

In reality, the nuclear weapons in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan had all been Soviet, with the launch codes in Moscow, where no one would ever have handed them over to anyone else, any more than anyone in London would ever do so. Keeping them outside Russia would have rendered them useless. Still, watch out for "They're Scotland's Nukes", on the grounds that, "We don't want to end up like Ukraine." It would be rubbish, but look at the SNP's currency and pensions policies. The SNP is very good at rubbish.

The Geographical Pivot of History?

Where is this "Taiwanese airspace"? According to the pretensions of the Republic of China, it must be the skies above the whole of China, most of Mongolia, and parts of Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Myanmar and, yes, Russia.

Like Taiwan and indeed Ukraine, Russia is of recent provenance as a middlingly democratic-to-undemocratic, undemocratic-to-democratic state. Today's anti-war demonstrations were able to be held, as would not have been the case in our beloved Saudi Arabia.

Such protests will soon be illegal in Britain, where the bundling of participants in them into the back of a police van has never been unusual. They would stand no chance against the emergency powers that have been invoked in Canada.

Ukraine, like Russia, is barely and recently part-democratic, it is Olympically corrupt, and it is highly militarised. How inextricably intertwined the two are is also evident from their violently opposed yet strikingly similar ultra-Nationalist ideologies.

As it is from the presence, at least until this week, of three million Ukrainian citizens in Russia. Eight NATO member states have fewer than three million people, which is the population of the NATO member state of Albania.

Neither all of the Ukrainians in Russia, nor all of the ethnic Russians in Ukraine, are products of population transfers by a Soviet regime in which Ukrainians and part-Ukrainians were highly prominent. But what if they were? That puts their roots anything up to a generation earlier than either the arrival of the Empire Windrush or the creation of the State of Israel, although in fact these populations are often centuries older than that.

The same is true of the ethnic Russians in the Baltic States. When, as in Ukraine, they protest against the removal of, for example, Soviet statues of soldiers, then why would anyone want to take down such a monument? The ones that were simply to the Soviet Union, as such, came down 30 years ago.

Those which remain, and which have Soviet symbols on them as another of the same vintage might sport a crowned GR, are memorials to the Second World War. The people who would tear them down think that the wrong side won that War.

In the Baltic, those people are in or close to the governments of NATO members states. As they are in much of Eastern Europe, where NATO's official publications, defining Russia as the eternal enemy, laud the collaborators as the liberating heroes.

Meanwhile, India, which is supposedly crucial to a maritime alliance of freedom-loving peoples against Eurasian authoritarianism, is run by the heirs of Mahatma Gandhi's Nazi-linked assassins, and it has always recognised among the fathers of the nation the likes of Subhas Chandra Bose, who raised an army in support of Japan during the War. He has featured on stamps six times, and on coins three times. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is the aviation hub for the whole of eastern and northeastern India. There is also a Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island. Yes, an island.

Japan is also supposed to be crucial, and it is run by people who believe, "that Japan should be applauded for liberating much of East Asia from Western colonial powers; that the 1946–1948 Tokyo War Crimes tribunals were illegitimate; and that killings by Imperial Japanese troops during the 1937 Nanjing Massacre were exaggerated or fabricated," as well as that the comfort women were not coerced.

The first of those, at least, has been a widespread view in several of those countries at the time and since. Indonesia, as such, is a direct product of it, since the Japanese-backed rulers of the Dutch East Indies simply declared independence under that name at the end of the War.

Park Chung-hee, the dictator of South Korea from 1961 to 1979, had been an officer in the Japanese Manchukuo Army that occupied Manchuria. And one who always regarded Japanese as his first language and Tokyo as the cultural capital of his wider civilisation was Lee Teng-hui, the first democratically elected President of the Republic of China on the island where we came in, Taiwan.

Prepare For This Onslaught?

The invasion of Ukraine deserves the same condemnation as the invasion of Iraq did, and it can be taken seriously only when it comes from the same people. We have also been arguing forever, and in great detail, for energy independence and for diversification away from the sale of arms abroad, so we welcome latecomers, but again we insist that they have a lot to learn. Luckily, we have a lot to teach.

Most wars are between two or more lots of baddies, and here we have two equally unpleasant ultra-Nationalist ideologies that closely resemble each other due to having been formed by a long and ongoing common history. We cannot know which of them will win, but we do know that we are going to have to deal with whichever of them did.

That is why Boris Johnson has once again confirmed that we are not going to be doing anything very much at all. Although we are still doing about as much as we possibly could. We have no sabre to rattle, and we cynically station our personnel in the Baltic States as a tripwire because we know that there would be no popular support whatever for any war with Russia unless it had directly attacked our people.

We ought not to regret either the defeat of Vladimir Putin's kleptocracy or the defeat of the Azov Battalion, but we are likely to get only one of those. In any case, neither of them is a threat to Britain unless we chose to make it so, as we therefore must not do. British journalists who express incredulity at the suggestion that Ukraine might need to be denazified either do not know what the symbols behind them are, or they are pretending not to do so. Each of those is inexcusable.

As for the reassertion of Eurasian authoritarianism, when did it ever go away? Indeed, what does anyone imagine that the regime in Turkey embodies, right here in NATO, and already vocal in support of Ukraine despite its own regular invasions of Syria and despite its occupation of part of Cyprus since 1974? And what of the regime in Hungary, which is in both NATO and the EU?

A supposedly rival alliance of maritime outposts of freedom and democracy extends to the land of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and to the land of Nippon Kaigi. Some of us have actually read Halford Mackinder, whereas those who are advocating this have either not done so or not understood him. Moreover, they have been spear-carriers for Saudi Arabia and for the other Gulf tyrannies since time immemorial. We need that money out of our politics, not after, but alongside, Russian, and indeed Chinese, money. Close done Londongrad. At the same time, close down Londonistan.

Pay Restraint, Indeed

He calls on the rest of us to refrain from asking for wages to keep up with the cost of living, but the Governor of the Bank of England does not know how much he himself is paid.

He is overpaid. You have to be very overpaid indeed not to know how much you are paid. And this fact about him explains a very great deal.

Power Station? Or Dogs Home?

John Bercow has led a right-wing coup in Battersea Labour Party. As soon as he was refused a peerage, then we knew that he would try and reenter the Commons, and as soon as Keir Starmer replaced Jeremy Corbyn, then we knew that he would try and become a Labour MP.

Bercow was kicked out of the Monday Club for adhering to its most extreme faction. I would love to see him as a Labour MP next time. It would say it all about what the Labour Party had become. But how has he not been suspended from it? Very longstanding members have been expelled for allegations less serious than those against Bercow.
