A Good Kicking

I do not know who the FA delegate was who voted for his own bid, but he certainly cannot have gone to school with Prince William or David Cameron. Hardly in a position to question other people's propriety, to put things at their very, very mildest.

England is in fact excelling this week at her real national sport, genuinely invented here and everything. Being from the North, the idea that it is "posh" is lost on me, as surely as is any such view of hunting. If you want a sport accessible only by the seriously well-heeled, then that is football.

Who are the Ashes? Are they W G Grace?

  1. That last para is in rather poor taste, isn't it?

  2. How? I genuinely want to know: who are they? He does seem the most obvious candidate for this honour. Are they he? If not, then who are they?

  3. I understood, probably from "look and Learn"c.1965, that they were the ashes of a pair of bails. Opinion is divided, however, except that they are not of a person but symbolise the corpse of English Cricket!
