As Seen; As Seen?

This letter of mine appears in this week's Catholic Herald:

After the Human Fertilisation and Embyology Bill, among so many other horrors such as the opening of betting shops on Good Friday, it is clear that we need a network of pro-life, pro-family, pro-worker and anti-war candidates to give real electoral choice to economically social-democratic, morally and socially conservative British and Commonwealth patriots in every constituency at the next General Election.

That Election is not now expected until the spring of 2010, giving us two years to raise funds for, and to publicise, our candidates. So, where are those candidates? Anyone interested, please get in touch without delay - davidaslindsay@hotmail.com

Did it also get into any one or more of The Tablet, The Catholic Times, The Universe, The Church Times, The Church of England Newspaper, The Methodist Recorder and The Baptist Times?

  1. All hail the English Santamaria, able to avoid the mistakes of the Australian one.

  2. How many replies have you got?

  3. Several today, actually. People either found it on their doormats on Friday, or picked it up at the back of church yesterday. And quite a few seem to have been moved to respond now that the week has started.

  4. Great! How many of them have volunteered to be candidates?

  5. Well, all of them, of course. That's why they wrote in. To be honest, I've been a bit busy replying to them to count them. But the more, the merrier, Freda. Do get in touch - davidaslindsay@hotmail.com

  6. Are you honestly saying you haven't counted them? Are we talking tens? Hundreds? Thousands?

I must say, if I were in your position I'd count them.

  7. Remember, we only have to be the first past the post. You can easily win a four-way split with 30% of the vote. In the bag in your seat, David.

And in lots of others too. I'm sitting here counting them up. The abolition of the 10p tax is Brown's Poll Tax. Put it together with everything else and there are huge numbers of "economically social democratic, morally and socially conservative British and Commonwealth patriots" just waiting to be reached.

Plus we have two years yet. From a standing start we could beat the Liberals in 2010, beat the Tories in 2014, and beat Labour (i.e. win the General Election) in 2018. In 10 years time you could be Prime Minister. Why not?

  8. And I will, Freda, probably at the end of the week (this is all extracurricular, after all - I do still have to eat as well). Will you be one of them? Do get in touch.

  9. Presumably they've just volunteered, they still need to be vetted, so it would be pointless to announce a number or any names at this stage?

  10. Oh, no, I have no interest in standing for elected office. I don't think I'd be particularly good at it, and in any case there are other things I want to do with my life.

  11. That's a bit harsh, David. Do you even know Freda?

  12. Come on, nobody says how many *applicants* they had!

Just as well, too. By all accounts the three parties now get almost none, double and single figures even for safe seats. Most of their remaining members are retired.

  13. Not in the Catholic papers this week either. I just checked

  14. Look out for it next week - they've changed their email addresses!
