Restless On The Right

As both the BBC and Sky News refer to Jeremy Corbyn as "the Leader", I have been reading some fascinating communications today.

The Labour Right is increasingly restless. There is no sign of that 20-point poll lead. There was a three-point lead a week ago, but that has since been reversed, and it was a complete one-off.

Labour is very occasionally level with a Government that will go into the next General Election with an overall majority of 80, but otherwise it is permanently behind the worst Government in living memory.

They are also annoyed with the U-turn over Brexit, and they have never been quite sure about a man who served in Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet.

The probable cancellation of next year's local elections might buy him some time; the Labour Right's sources of revenue were going to be devastated. But the inevitable cannot be delayed forever.

Expect Leadership challenges from both the Right and the Left next year. If both of those got onto the ballot paper, then Keir Starmer might very well be the incumbent who came third.

He certainly would be if, as ought to happen, the left-wing challenger were to be Jeremy Corbyn.
