Intercontinental Budgie Smuggling

Tony Abbott is himself a refugee. A failed politician from the other side of the world, where he is routinely voted the worst Prime Minister ever, he has washed up in his native London decades after his adult decision to renounce his British citizenship.

There is considerable consternation in Australia at the continued funding of his office now that he is advising the trade negotiators of a foreign power. Let there be no doubt that that is how Britain is universally regarded in Australia.

Since time immemorial, Australian Ministers, of any party, have always been the most difficult for their British counterparts, of any party, to deal with. When you realise that, then Abbott's appointment starts to make a small amount of sense.

Meanwhile, he is also exercising influence over Priti Patel's Home Office. And while he had to renounce his British citizenship in order to sit in the Australian Parliament, as a Commonwealth citizen he would be eligible to stand for the British Parliament.

In the league of the New Right's touring rulers of anywhere that will have them, Abbott is beginning to rival even Mikheil Saakashvili, who is a serial asylum-seeker from his own failures. May we look forward to Saakashvili's impending arrival as something or other in this Government? As if it were not bad enough already.
