If embryonic stem cells have indeed been used to cure macular degeneration, then that is the first successful use of them to cure anything. Yet they have been held up for decades as the miracle cure for everything.
But anyway, it is not yet established that this treatment will not cause cancer. And it it needs to be asked whether embryonic stem cells, rather than ethically unproblematic adult and cord blood stem cells, were uniquely appropriate in this case.
