The latest IpsosMori poll has Labour
down three points to 34 per cent, with the Conservatives on 31 per cent, UKIP on
11 per cent, the Lib Dems on nine per cent, and the Greens statistically tied
with them on eight per cent.
A three-point lead is a storming Labour
majority, but that is not news. The news here is that the Greens have gone up
by no fewer than five points.
This poll is very much in line with
others of late. People are not flocking to the Conservatives. Rather, those
who voted Lib Dem in 2010 are going Green.
The huge Labour leads, next to which that
party now seems to be doing quite badly, had been artificially inflated by
those people.
But they were never very reliable for
Labour. Nor does Labour need them in order to win.
The Lib Dems, however, do need them, simply in order to survive. But it has lost them, and it is losing more of them all the time. Oblivion awaits.
