"No Manufacturing Base"
So assumed several panellists on Question Time. But in fact, even now, the whole of the financial services sector, never mind the bailed-out City alone, still accounts for less than half the GDP that manufacturing does. It is high time that both economic policy and the wider culture reflected this: the manufacturing base in, especially, Scotland, Wales, the North and the Midlands is paying the taxes to keep the London media's and the Political Class's mates in the City from becoming so poor that they themselves might have to pay tax.
