Why would you want Liz Truss to become Prime Minister? With Rishi Sunak out of the running, then she would do so on the spot if Boris Johnson resigned. A Leadership Election would then be wildly unlikely, but were it to be held, then the incumbent Prime Minister would of course win it hands down.
This coup offers nothing to those of us who sought economic equality and international peace through the democratic political control of the means to those ends. We must do nothing to cheer it on. On the contrary, after everything that will have happened by the end of this Parliament, it is by Johnson that the Labour Right must be defeated. It would never be able to recover from that humiliation.
I am not advocating a vote for the Conservatives. We need to get enough of our people elected to create a hung Parliament either next time or the time after that. Then we could tell the smug and entitled Labour Party to get lost. Who is to say that we would get less out of the other side? Less than the nothing that we had always got out of Labour? How? Just so long as the other side had never been led by Truss. This coup is against our interest.
Spot on.
