Is It That Time Again?

Every dozen years or so, when all threat has been removed that a change of government might lead to a change of policy, then it becomes about "sleaze" again. And here we are.

For the third time in my politically active lifetime, they are going to get away with arguing that the way to stop them from being corrupt is to pay them even more.

Of course there is not going to be a ban on second jobs. Being Prime Minister is a second job; indeed, since it is paid more than being an MP, it is in fact Boris Johnson's main job. When he writes his rather good books, then Chris Bryant is doing his second job.

What of keeping in touch with the lives of ordinary people? There may be exceptions, such as continuing to practise medicine, or at the Criminal or Family Bar. All human life is here, indeed. But in general, if you wanted to keep in touch with the lives of the rest of us, then the last thing that you would need would be a six figure salary.  Get a job as a cleaner, or on a supermarket checkout.

And let's get some people with those sorts of experiences into Parliament. Among other benefits, so to speak, they would certainly not complain about £81,932 plus expenses.
