Go Figure

The death of Shirley Williams calls to mind the fact that the combined Labour and SDP vote was higher than the Conservative vote both in 1983 and in 1987.

But Labour will have no such excuse for the three figure Conservative majority in 2024.

  1. «the combined Labour and SDP vote was higher than the Conservative vote both in 1983 and in 1987.»

Just as the combined Labour, LibDem, Green vote would give an anti-Conservative majority of seats.

But the SDP and the LibDems are not anti-Conservative, they were and are primarily thatcherite anti-Labour. But they may be, at least ideologically, sympathetic to [New] New Labour, as it was and is thatcherite too.

«But Labour will have no such excuse for the three figure Conservative majority in 2024.»

The New New Labour strategy is the same as that of New Labour in the second half of the 1990s: be thatcherite and look like a substitute for, rather than an alternative to, the Conservatives, so if there is a southern property crash between now and 2024 southern thatcherite voters will switch to New New Labour to punish the Conservatives for the property crash.
A southern property crash may yet happen before 2024.
