There can be all sorts of reasons, good or bad, for local government reorganisation. But we can all see what it is going on when, on the scale proposed in England, it is to be done by a Government that had just proudly announced its partnership with BlackRock, and no doubt had plenty more of that sort of thing in the pipeline.
We are on the road to freeports and to Special Enterprise Zones. Privatisation and deregulation were always assaults on democracy and sovereignty, and here we are. Having sold the family silver, they are now clearing the way to sell the family. Municipal arrangements may not be thrilling. But there are far worse fates than being a bit bored.
