The Sabeans, Men of Stature

It is the Goldmans and the Sachses of the world who are saying, "Dammit, no, our distant cousins in the hippy commune kibbutzim, and in the shtetls rebuilt in the Sun, do not get to lose us this kind of money. Reopen the goddam Canal."

No one is so big that their actions are allowed to block the Suez Canal, while Britain, Germany, and Emmanuel Macron's France do not breathe without American approval. David Cameron, Annalena Baerbock and Catherine Colonna have made it clear, effectively on behalf of the Biden Administration, that the Houthis now mattered more. There really is hope for absolutely anyone yet.

Still, if you go back far enough, then everyone came from somewhere that was barely anywhere. "A wandering Aramean was my father," and all that. One day, Amran and Saada will be the stuff of legend.

  1. Will Britain be more than mouth at the UN tonight?

    1. We shall see. But the shift is already more than discernible, and even Australia voted last week for a ceasefire, which is even bigger news than a British break with the United States would be. Old Etonians are not in politics to turn Britain into a pretend-independent American base that was allowed at the UN purely to make up the numbers for Israel.

    2. 10 Tory MPs including ex-Cabinet ministers have written to Cameron tonight to call for a ceasefire.

    3. And the supremely spooky Alicia Kearns, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, says that Israel has "gone beyond self-defence", thereby losing moral authority. Bring on another Commons vote. If only to show them all up as gobs on sticks. But preferably not.

  2. The Houthis and the world have worked out the Houthis control access to the Red Sea, suddenly they matter.
