An old friend and regular reader assures me that the Government is way ahead of me. It has a scheme for "Torystans".
That was my friend's word, and apparently it is in use among the people who matter. Torystans are to be set up in the New Blue areas, including this western part of County Durham. Like several of the others, that would have no obvious centre, "but there are ways around that kind of thing." Indeed, there are.
Durham County Hall would then become one of several rump centres of collapsed and dismembered empires whose inhabitants had been granted self-determination, recalling the grand buildings of Vienna after the First World War. In rehashing 30-year-old Fabian pamphlets, Keir Starmer should be careful what he wishes for.
