The Most Anti-Christian Country On Earth

I have been saying this about Ireland for nearly 20 years, and it was not a new phenomenon then.

There has never been a Catholic culture, as such, in Ireland. Name the Irish Newman, or the Irish Chesterton, or the Irish equivalent of any of a thousand giants of Catholic culture on the Continent.

There was very high Mass attendance as a twentieth-century phenomenon, but there was nothing beyond that. And now, there is nothing much at all.

Although notice that almost everyone in the Irish Republic, and about half the population of the North, has done or is doing anything up to 13 years of Catholic school. So much for that.

Being Catholic was the mark of being poor in Ireland. They are no longer poor, so they are no longer Catholic.

In the midst of Brexit, a United Ireland is being sold to the Protestants in the North as the way of getting abortion and same-sex marriage, which their own fundamentalist minority will block until Kingdom Come via the complex parliamentary procedures of Northern Ireland.

Not so, the Republic, which has introduced them by simple popular vote.
