No one is going to weep to see Radovan Karadžić banged up for the rest of his life. Now, what about all those sort-of-all-right Croats, and what about all those lily white Bosniak Muslims? They were not really like that, you know.
What about the massacre at Ahmići, where the Croats slaughtered Muslims and the man mainly responsible got 25 years in jail? Can you name him? I bet you can't. And then there was the Bosniak Muslim camp at Čelebić, where Serbian prisoners were beaten, tortured and murdered. Had you ever heard of that, either?
Neither of these is an isolated example. Furthermore, each is in a very specific and very much living tradition, respectively that of the Ustasha and that of the Handschar Division, both mysteriously airbrushed from history.
In Yugoslavia, there was no good side. But the whole thing set the precedent for the wars of purportedly humanitarian intervention that were to follow. And most British MPs are still committed to all of that. Another hung Parliament is coming, however, and we need our people to hold the balance of power in it.
It has become a local commonplace that I am on 30-30-30 with Labour and the Conservatives here at North West Durham, so that any one of us could be the First Past the Post.
